How to Judge a PPF Installer Before You Commit
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
Paint protection film is the least forgiving service in detailing. A ceramic coating applied slightly unevenly still works. A film applied in a dusty bay traps every particle under a clear layer, permanently, at eye level.
The good news is that installation quality is unusually easy to assess in advance.
Look at the bay before anything else
Ask to see where the work happens. You want enclosed walls, a solid roof, bright even lighting and a floor that has been swept recently. An open shed beside a main road cannot produce a clean install no matter how good the installer, because dust lands on the panel between wash and application.
In Thane, where Ghodbunder Road throws construction dust year-round, this matters more than almost anywhere else in the metro.
Ask about edges
The single question that predicts install quality: do you wrap the edges or trim them?
Wrapped edges continue around the panel and tuck behind, so no line is visible and nothing catches dirt or lifts. Trimming stops the film at the panel edge, leaving a visible seam that collects grime and eventually peels. Wrapping means removing badges, lights, handles and sometimes bumpers β hours of extra labour, and the main reason two quotes differ.
Ask how patterns are cut
Digital plotter cutting from a vehicle-specific template keeps blades away from your paint entirely. Hand cutting on the car is sometimes necessary for rare vehicles, but a slip scores the clear coat. For any mainstream model, digital patterns should be standard.
Check the paperwork
You should leave with a warranty certificate naming the film, the coverage, the installation date and your vehicle. Two things to confirm:
- Whether the warranty is from the film manufacturer or only the installer.
- Whether it covers yellowing, cracking and delamination β and whether replacement labour is included.
What warranties actually cover goes deeper.
Ask what happens to existing damage
Film magnifies whatever is underneath it. Any swirls, scratches or embedded contamination must be corrected first. A good installer raises this without prompting and quotes correction separately. One who says the film will "cover" existing marks is telling you they intend to seal them in.
See a car they finished six months ago
New installs all look good. Ask whether they have a customer car from six months or a year back they can show you, or point you to photos. Look specifically at bonnet edges, mirror corners and the bumper's tightest curves β the places lifting starts.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a front-end kit take?
A full day for careful work with wrapped edges. Half a day suggests trimmed edges and no disassembly.
Can I add ceramic coating on top?
Yes, and many owners do β see how the two layer together.
What if bubbles appear after fitting?
Small moisture pockets are normal in the first week and usually disappear as the adhesive cures. Anything still visible after two weeks should go back to the installer.
