Removing PPF: What Condition Is the Paint in Underneath?

Paint protection film is not permanent. Somewhere between five and ten years, it needs to come off — because it has aged, because a panel was damaged, or because the car is being sold.

The good news

Film removed within its intended life comes off cleanly, and the paint underneath is usually in noticeably better condition than the unfilmed panels beside it. No chips, no UV fade, original gloss. This is film doing exactly what it was bought for.

Removal is a heat-and-peel process: warm the panel, lift a corner, pull the film back on itself at a shallow angle, then clean off adhesive residue with a safe solvent. A full front takes a few hours; a full body can take a day or more.

When it goes wrong

Three situations cause trouble:

• Film left far past its life. Old, brittle film tears into small pieces instead of peeling in sheets. What should take three hours takes ten, and the labour cost reflects it.
• Cheap adhesive. Budget film adhesive cures hard and can leave heavy residue that needs extended solvent work.
• Film over repainted panels. This is the real risk. Aftermarket respray, especially if it was not fully cured or properly prepared before filming, can lift with the film. Factory paint almost never does.

If any panel on your car has been resprayed, tell the installer before filming and again before removal. A good studio will test a small area first.
