Front-End vs Full-Body PPF: Where the Damage Actually Happens
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
Film pricing scales with area, so coverage is the single biggest lever on cost. Choosing well means knowing where cars actually get damaged.
Where damage happens
On Mumbai and Thane roads the pattern is consistent:
- Front bumper — the worst-hit panel by a distance. Stone chips, gravel, kerb scuffs.
- Bonnet leading edge — the first 45–60 cm takes almost all bonnet chipping.
- Wing mirrors — constant in traffic.
- Headlights — chips and hazing.
- Door edges and handle cups — nail scratches and parking contact.
- Rear bumper top — loading scuffs.
- Rocker panels behind the front wheels — spray-thrown grit.
Doors, roof, quarter panels and boot lid see comparatively little impact damage — mostly wash swirls, which a ceramic coating handles at a fraction of the cost.
The common coverage levels
| Package | Typically covers | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Partial front | Bumper, bonnet leading edge, mirrors, headlights | ₹25,000 – ₹45,000 |
| Full front | Full bonnet, full bumper, both fenders, mirrors, headlights | ₹55,000 – ₹95,000 |
| Track / high-impact pack | Full front plus rockers, A-pillars, roof leading edge, door cups and edges | ₹85,000 – ₹1,40,000 |
| Full body | Every painted panel | ₹1,60,000 – ₹3,50,000+ |
Ranges vary with film brand and vehicle size — see the Mumbai cost breakdown and the Thane full-body guide.
Spending a fixed budget well
Given, say, ₹80,000, there are two ways to spend it:
- Full-body film in cheap unbranded material. Complete coverage that may yellow within two summers, with no warranty and an expensive removal ahead.
- Full front in quality branded film, plus a ceramic coating on the rest. Real impact protection where impacts happen, a manufacturer warranty, and gloss plus wash protection everywhere else.
The second is almost always the better outcome. Film quality matters more than film quantity.
When full body does make sense
- Cars with expensive or hard-to-match paint — matte finishes, tri-coat pearls, special-order colours.
- Vehicles that will be resold within a few years where paint condition drives value. More on this.
- Regular highway use, where debris strikes panels far past the front end.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add coverage later?
Yes. Film is applied panel by panel, so you can start with the front and extend later.
Will partial coverage show a visible line?
On a bonnet leading-edge job, yes — there is a horizontal edge. Wrapped-edge installation on full panels avoids it.
Does film go on before or after coating?
Correction, then film, then coating over the top.
