Does PPF Turn Yellow? What the Warranty Actually Covers
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
Yellowing is the reason paint protection film had a poor reputation a decade ago, and the reason film brand still matters more than almost any other choice in detailing.
Why old film yellowed
Early films used adhesives and polymer layers that degraded under UV. The film gradually took on an amber cast, most visible where it met unfilmed paint — a clear tide line across the bonnet. Once it started, nothing reversed it.
India accelerates this. Strong year-round UV and long periods parked outdoors are close to worst-case conditions.
What changed
Modern quality films are thermoplastic polyurethane with UV inhibitors built into the top layer and a clear, non-yellowing adhesive. Good film now carries explicit warranties against yellowing for five to ten years.
The catch: this applies to branded film from established manufacturers. Unbranded film sold on price still yellows, often within two Indian summers, and no warranty accompanies it.
Reading the warranty properly
Three questions decide whether a warranty is worth anything:
- Who issues it? A manufacturer warranty survives the installer closing down. An installer-only warranty does not.
- What is covered? Look specifically for yellowing, cracking, blistering and delamination named individually. "Defects" alone is too vague.
- Is labour included? Replacing film is overwhelmingly a labour cost. A warranty covering material only is worth a fraction of what it appears to be.
Also check what voids it. Automatic brush washes, pressure washing at close range on edges, and polishing compounds on the film usually do.
What you should receive
A certificate naming the film product, the coverage areas, the installation date, the installer and your vehicle registration. If a studio cannot produce this, you have no warranty regardless of what was said. More checks before booking.
Reducing the risk anyway
- Park in shade or a basement where possible — UV exposure is the main driver.
- Wash with pH-neutral shampoo; avoid solvent-based cleaners on film.
- Add a ceramic coating over the film; it adds a sacrificial UV-resistant layer and makes cleaning easier.
- Remove bird droppings promptly — they etch film as readily as paint.
Frequently asked questions
How soon would yellowing show on cheap film?
Often within 18–24 months in Indian conditions, starting on the bonnet and roof.
Can yellowed film be fixed?
No. It must be removed and replaced.
Does yellowing damage the paint underneath?
Usually not — the paint beneath is generally well preserved. The cost is redoing the film.
