That Damp Monsoon Smell in Your Car: Cause and Cure

By August, a lot of cars in Mumbai and Thane smell faintly of a damp cupboard. It is not the upholstery being old. It is microbial growth, and it has three usual homes.

Where it comes from

1. The air conditioning evaporator

The most common source. The evaporator sits behind the dashboard and runs cold, so it condenses moisture constantly. In humid weather it never fully dries, and mould grows on it. The giveaway: the smell is strongest in the first thirty seconds after starting the AC.

2. Wet carpet underlay

Water from shoes, umbrellas and leaking seals soaks through the carpet into the foam underlay beneath. The visible surface dries in a day; the underlay stays wet for weeks. Press the carpet firmly in the footwell — if it feels cool and damp, that is it.

3. Blocked drains and seals

Sunroof drain tubes and door drains clog with debris, so water backs up into the cabin. Perished door seals do the same. This produces a persistent damp patch that recurs no matter how often the interior is cleaned.

Why air fresheners fail

They add a scent on top of an odour produced by living organisms. The mould keeps producing it. Within a day or two the freshener fades and the smell returns — often smelling worse for the combination.

What actually works

1. Find and stop the water. Clear the drains, replace failed seals. Skip this and the problem returns every season.
2. Dry the interior completely. If the underlay is wet, that means lifting carpet and using extraction and forced drying — an interior deep clean, not a vacuum.
3. Treat the AC system. Replace the cabin air filter and have the evaporator treated with an antimicrobial foam through the drain or vents.
4. Kill what remains. Ozone treatment — the car is sealed and ozone circulated for 30–60 minutes, oxidising odour compounds and mould spores in fabric, vents and headliner, in places no cleaning reaches. The car is then aired thoroughly before use.
