Car Interior Deep Cleaning: What It Includes and What It Costs
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
Interiors take more abuse than paint and get a fraction of the attention. Food, sweat, monsoon damp, dust and years of skin oil on the steering wheel — none of which a vacuum touches.
What a proper deep clean includes
- Full strip-out. Mats, boot liner, and on a thorough job the seats unbolted so the carpet is accessible.
- Detailed vacuuming with crevice and brush tools — rails, under seats, seat gaps, boot well.
- Shampoo and hot-water extraction on fabric seats and carpets, which pulls dissolved dirt back out rather than pushing it deeper.
- Leather cleaning and conditioning with pH-appropriate products. Aggressive cleaners dry leather and crack it.
- Hard surfaces — dashboard, console, door cards, vents, switchgear, seat belts, with a non-greasy finish rather than a shiny dressing.
- Headliner, cleaned carefully — over-wetting causes it to sag permanently.
- Glass, inside — the film that builds on the windscreen interior badly affects night visibility.
- AC vents and cabin filter, since that is where damp smell originates.
- Full drying before handover. Critical in Mumbai humidity.

How to tell a real job from a quick one
- Time. A genuine deep clean is four to eight hours. Ninety minutes is a good vacuum and a wipe-down.
- Seats out? Ask. It is the difference between cleaning carpet and cleaning around carpet.
- Extraction machine or just shampoo and brush? Without extraction, dirt is redistributed and the fabric stays wet.
- Drying. A car returned damp in monsoon will smell within a week.
- Finish. Greasy shine on the dashboard means a silicone dressing covering dirt, not cleaning it.
How often
Once a year for most cars; twice for family cars carrying children, pets or food, and ideally once immediately after the monsoon — see the seasonal checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Will it remove old stains?
Most food and drink stains lift with extraction. Dye transfer from clothing and old oil marks may not fully.
Is it safe on leather?
Yes with the right products. Confirm the studio uses leather-specific cleaner, not an all-purpose one.
How long is the car unavailable?
Most studios take the car for a full day to allow proper drying.
