Cloudy Headlights: Restore or Replace?

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass — lighter, tougher against stones, and vulnerable to UV. The factory applies a hard UV-resistant coating. In Indian sun that coating typically starts failing somewhere between four and seven years.

What is actually happening

Once the protective coating degrades, UV attacks the polycarbonate itself. It oxidises, yellows and develops a rough microscopic texture that scatters light. Sand and grit abrade it further.

The effect is not cosmetic. A badly hazed lens can lose a large share of usable light output and throws a scattered beam that dazzles oncoming traffic while lighting the road less well. It is a monsoon and night-driving safety issue.

How proper restoration works

1. Mask the surrounding paint — the abrasives used will damage it.
2. Wet sand progressively: coarse to remove the degraded layer, then finer grades to refine.
3. Machine polish with a plastic-safe compound until optically clear.
4. Apply a new UV clear coat. This is the step that decides longevity.

Step four is where cheap jobs cut corners. Sanding and polishing alone leaves bare, unprotected polycarbonate — it looks excellent for two months and then hazes faster than before, because the original protection is now gone entirely. What a proper restoration includes.

When restoration will not work

• Internal condensation or fogging. The damage is inside; the outside surface is fine. Needs a seal repair or replacement.
• Cracked lens. Structural — replace.
• Delaminated internal reflector. Visible as patchy or burnt-looking areas inside. Not repairable externally.
• Very deep crazing. If the network of fine cracks runs deep, sanding enough to remove it would thin the lens excessively.

Keeping it clear afterwards

Apply PPF over restored lenses — it protects against both UV and stone chips, and is what most detailing studios recommend on cars kept long-term. A ceramic coating on the lens is a lighter alternative. Park in shade where you can.
