Monsoon Car Care Checklist for Mumbai and Thane
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
Mumbai's monsoon is not just water. It is acidic runoff, salt-laden humidity, waterlogged roads and constant damp inside the cabin. Cars that come through it well are the ones prepared in May, not repaired in September.
Before the rains — the two-week window
- Decontaminate and correct the paint. Bonded contamination traps moisture against the clear coat. A correction or at minimum a decontamination wash gives the season a clean starting point.
- Protect it. A ceramic coating is the single most useful monsoon investment — water sheets off, acidic rain is far less likely to etch, and washing gets easier through the worst months. Mumbai pricing here.
- Underbody protection. This is the season that rusts cars in coastal Maharashtra. Underbody coating before the water arrives, not after. Why it matters here.
- Check door and boot seals. Perished rubber lets water into footwells, which is where damp smells begin.
- Drain channels. Sunroof drains, bonnet channels and door drains clog with dust and leaf debris. Clearing them takes minutes and prevents genuinely expensive water ingress.
- Wipers, tyres, lights. Replace worn blades; check tread depth; restore hazed headlights, which cost you real visibility in heavy rain — restore or replace.
During the season
- Rinse after heavy rain. Rain is not a wash. Runoff leaves acidic residue that etches as it dries.
- Never dry-wipe. Wet grit dragged across paint is the fastest route to swirl marks. More on this.
- Ventilate the cabin. Run the AC on fresh air for a few minutes at the end of each trip, and use the demist setting to dry the evaporator.
- Get wet mats out. A soaked mat left in a closed car for two days is how mould starts. Fixing the smell.
- Avoid deep water. Even if you clear it, check what got in.
After the monsoon
By October, book a proper reset: a full exterior detail to remove four months of accumulated fallout, an interior deep clean to deal with damp and mould in carpets and vents, and an underbody inspection for early corrosion.

Frequently asked questions
Is a coating worth it just for monsoon?
It pays for itself across two or three seasons in reduced washing, less etching and better resale paint condition.
Should I use a car cover in the rain?
Only a breathable one. A plastic cover on a wet car traps moisture against the paint.
