You Drove Through Waterlogging: The Checks to Do Now

Every Mumbai monsoon puts thousands of cars through standing water. Most survive mechanically. The damage that costs money is slower: damp trapped in carpet underlay, corrosion starting in connectors, mould in the ventilation system.
Do this immediately
- If the engine stalled in water, do not restart it. Water in the intake means hydrolock, and cranking bends connecting rods. Have it towed.
- Note how deep the water reached. The waterline on the door usually shows. Below the sills is minor; above the floor is serious.
- Lift the mats and press the carpet. If water comes up, the underlay is soaked — it will not dry on its own in monsoon humidity.
- Check the spare wheel well and boot. Water collects there and is easily missed for weeks.
- Open everything and ventilate. Doors and windows open in a dry covered space, AC on fresh air, mats out.
Within a few days
- Underbody wash. Flood water leaves silt and salt in every cavity. Rinse it out before it starts corroding, and inspect any underbody coating for damage.
- Brakes. Silt on discs and pads causes noise and uneven wear; water in brake fluid lowers its boiling point.
- Electricals. Test every window, light, sensor and the infotainment. Intermittent faults after a flood usually mean a wet connector.
- Oil check. Milky oil on the dipstick means water has got in. Do not drive.
- Cabin air filter. Replace it. It will have taken in moisture and will seed mould otherwise.
When you need professional interior work
If water reached above the floor, home drying will not reach the underlay. Seat foam and carpet backing hold litres and dry from the top down, leaving the base wet for weeks — which is exactly the condition mould needs.
A proper interior deep clean removes seats and carpet, extracts water, treats the affected material and dries it fully. If the smell has already started, add ozone treatment — the full process.
