Ceramic Coating Maintenance: Washing Without Ruining the Coat
By PaintProtectionFilm Team
A coating's job is to make washing easier. Ironically, washing is what usually kills it. The two habits that shorten coating life most are automatic brush washes and harsh detergents β both entirely avoidable.
The first seven days
A fresh coating is still curing chemically. During the first week:
- Do not wash the car at all.
- Keep it out of rain for at least the first 24β48 hours.
- Remove bird droppings immediately with a damp microfibre and plain water β do not rub.
- Avoid parking under trees.
The routine after that
- Rinse first. Loosen and float off grit before anything touches the paint. Most swirl marks are put in by dragging dry dust across a panel.
- pH-neutral shampoo only. Degreasers and "wash and wax" products with high pH strip the hydrophobic layer. The label should say pH-neutral or coating-safe.
- Two buckets. One with shampoo, one with plain water to rinse the mitt after every panel, ideally with a grit guard. Why this matters so much.
- Top down. Roof, glass, upper panels, then lower panels and finally sills and bumpers, which carry the most grit.
- Dry properly. A clean drying towel or filtered blower. Letting a car air-dry in Mumbai leaves mineral spots that etch into the coating over time.
What to avoid entirely
- Automatic brush washes. Rotating brushes carry grit from every previous car.
- Household detergent or dish soap. Strips the coating quickly.
- Dry wiping dust. The fastest way to swirl paint.
- Pressure washing at close range on edges. Can lift film edges and force water into trim.
Every few months
Use a coating-safe maintenance spray or topper after washing. It restores slickness and beading and takes a few minutes. Most coating manufacturers sell a matched product; using theirs avoids compatibility questions.
Once a year, book a maintenance visit β decontamination plus a top-up. It costs a fraction of recoating and is what actually gets a coating to its rated life. Realistic lifespans in Mumbai.
Monsoon and coastal notes
Rain is not clean. Monsoon runoff carries acidic pollutants that etch if left to dry. Rinse the car after heavy rain rather than assuming it has been washed. If you park within a couple of kilometres of the sea, rinse more often β salt is relentless and finds every seam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use a pressure washer?
Yes, at sensible distance and not aimed directly at edges, trim or film seams.
Do I still need wax?
No. Wax on a coating adds nothing and can mask the hydrophobic behaviour.
What if beading has stopped?
Try a decontamination wash and a maintenance topper first. If neither restores it, the coating has reached the end.
