Watch the water. A healthy coating makes water bead tightly and roll off at a slight angle. As it degrades, beads flatten, then sheet, then start sitting on the surface and drying into spots. When you notice water sitting rather than running, the coating is near the end.

Extending it

• Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo, two-bucket method — the technique matters.
• Use a coating-safe maintenance spray every few months; most manufacturers sell one.
• Rinse off salt spray if you park near the sea, and rinse after driving through monsoon flooding.
• Book an annual maintenance visit. Many studios offer a decontamination and top-up far cheaper than recoating.
