Ceramic Coating a New Car: Before Delivery or After?

A new car is the best possible candidate for a ceramic coating. The clear coat has never been corrected, so it is at full thickness, and protecting it from day one means it may never need heavy correction at all.

That does not mean the paint arrives flawless.

Why new paint often still needs correction

Between the factory and your driveway, a car is transported on open trucks, stored in yards, and washed at the dealership by staff working quickly. Common results:

• Swirl marks from dealer prep washing with dirty cloths.
• Industrial fallout and rail dust bonded to horizontal panels during transit.
• Tree sap or bird lime from yard storage.
• Occasional buffer trails from touch-up work.

A good studio inspects under proper lighting and usually finds enough to warrant at least a light single-stage correction. It is far less work than on a used car, so the cost is lower — but it is rarely zero. Why it matters.

Dealer packages vs independent studios

Most dealerships offer a coating add-on at delivery. Points to check before accepting:

• Which product and grade? Dealer packages are often a fast-applied sealant rather than a multi-year SiO₂ coating.
• Is correction included? Usually not — the car goes straight from prep wash to application.
• How long is the car in the bay? A genuine coating needs a day or more. An hour means a spray sealant.
• Who honours the warranty? The dealer, an outsourced applicator, or the film manufacturer?

Timing

There is no need to rush the car straight from showroom to studio. Paint on modern production cars is fully cured before it leaves the factory, so coating can happen any time.
