9H, 10H and Graphene: Decoding Ceramic Coating Marketing

Coating marketing leans heavily on numbers that sound scientific. Most quotes you receive will mention 9H, some will claim 10H, and an increasing number will offer graphene. Two of those three mean something specific.

What 9H actually measures

9H comes from the pencil hardness test, a coatings-industry method where pencils of graded hardness are pushed across a cured film to see which one scratches it. The scale runs from 6B (softest) to 9H (hardest). 9H is simply the top of that scale.

So "9H" means the coating resisted the hardest pencil in the set. That is a genuine, if modest, claim. It says nothing about resistance to stone chips, keys or brush washes — all far harder than a pencil.

Why 10H does not exist

The pencil scale stops at 9H. A product advertised as 10H is using a number outside the standard it references. That does not automatically make the coating bad, but it tells you something about how the brand markets itself.

If a studio leads with 10H, ask instead: which product, what grade, what warranty, and what does the manufacturer's own datasheet say?

Graphene coatings

Graphene coatings add graphene oxide to a silica base. The claimed benefits are better heat dissipation (so panels stay cooler and water-spot less in strong sun), slightly more flexibility, and longer life.

Independent evidence for dramatic superiority is thin, but the products are legitimate and generally sit at the premium end. In Mumbai's sun the water-spotting argument has some practical weight — spotting is a real problem here, especially on dark cars parked outdoors.

Whether it justifies the price premium over a good SiO₂ coating is a judgement call. It is not a different category of protection.

What actually predicts a good result

In rough order of importance:

1. How thoroughly the paint was corrected and prepared.
2. Whether the panel wipe removed all polishing oils before application.
3. Cure conditions — controlled, covered, undisturbed.
4. How the owner washes the car afterwards.
5. The coating product itself.

The bottle is last. A premium coating over unprepared paint will underperform a mid-grade coating over properly corrected paint, every time. How to assess the studio doing the work.

• What is the product name and grade, and can I see the datasheet?
• How many layers, and what is the flash and cure time for each?
• Is the warranty from the manufacturer, and what does it require of me?

No. It resists light swirl marks. Stone chips and key scratches need paint protection film.

Are more layers better?

Up to a point. Two layers is common; beyond that returns diminish and the risk of high spots rises.
